Olene Beverly (Vincent) Holt, 84, of Duluth, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012. She was born in Gordon, Wisconsin, on September 28, 1927, to Ernest and Alma Vincent. Olene was a 1945 graduate of Gordon High School, received her RN Degree from St. Luke's School of Nursing, and worked in Duluth as an RN. Olene volunteered in several organizations including being a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, past member of Church Council, the Dorcas Circle, TOPS, St. Luke's Nursing Alumni and the Girl Scout Council. She was extremely proud of her three sons and one grandson (Adam) for being Eagle Scouts. Olene will be greatly missed but she was looking forward to rejoining her husband "Jack". Olene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years, John "Jack" Holt; brothers, Gerald, Emory, Gene, Bob and Ernest "Bud"; sisters, Grace Johnson, Nellie Lawler and Shirley Lannin. She is survived by five children, John (Jan) Holt, Susan (Jeff) Thompson and Paul (Kristine) Holt all of Hermantown, Nancy (James) King of Watertown, NY and Mark (Julie) Holt of Champlin, Minn; a sister, Sue Bergin of Cloquet; nine grandchildren, Jolene Conway, Joanna King, Joni Forrest, Jamie King, Kyle Thompson, Adam and Amanda Holt and Chelsea and Payton Holt; six great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Edgewood Vista, Chris Jensen and St. Luke's Hospital for their care. Visitation will be from 1 until the 2 p.m. funeral service Sunday, June 3, 2012 in Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign St. Rev Michael Main officiating. Burial in Sunrise Cemetery.

In the 1915 Duluth city directory, he was a foreman for the D&IRRR and lived at 5131 Glendale.

Living in Gordon, Douglas County, Wisconsin, in the 1920 census, in the 1930 census and at the time of Martin Bye’s death. Ernest is a farmer in the 1920 census but is shown as a manager of a gas station in the 1930 census.

In the 1940 census, he was an agent for Standard Oil. He and Alma and their family lived in Gordon.

His mother’s maiden name is shown as Wold on his death certificate.

Alma was at least his second wife. He had several children by an earlier wife, Lillian Bassett, who died a couple of years before he married Alma.

Ernest married Alma O WOLD on 25 Nov 1916 in Lake County, Minnesota. Alma (daughter of Hans Olsen WOLD and Karen Sophie (Sophie) OLSON) was born in Jun 1892 in Minnesota; died on 31 Oct 1960 in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin; was buried in Gordon Memorial Cemetery, Gordon, Wisconsin. Notes:

Based on a DNA test of her grandson (that grandson shows as a shared match with a descendant of Olianna’s brother Theodor), one of Alma’s parents must be related to Olianna. Hans Wold was from Verdal.

Shown as a high school student in the 1910 census.

In the 1911 Fergus Falls city directory, she still lived at home with her mother and step-father but she was employed as a teacher.

In the Duluth 1914 city directory, she may have been the Alma Wold who was a student at the Duluth Business University and boarded at 132 S 28th Av E.

In the 1915 Duluth directory, there was an Alma O Wold who was a clerk for the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad. She boarded at 1213 E Superior.

In the 1916 Duluth directory, Alma O Wold, still a clerk for the D&IRRR boarded at 1509 E Superior.

Conspicuously not mentioned in her brother’s obituary.

Notes:

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he is probably the Hans, age 14, no patronym, who is a servant on Maritvold 26a in Verdal.

In the 1895 census, as Hans Wald, he ran a saloon in Fergus Falls. He had been a resident of Minnesota for 13 years and had been a resident of the local area for 7 years and 10 months. The household consisted of Hans, 42, Sophie, 39, Harold, 7, and Alma, 2.

He was hospitalized in St. Paul and died after an operation.

Seems to have had an older brother, Oluf.

Hans is related to Martinus Bye or Olianna.

Hans married Karen Sophie (Sophie) OLSON. Karen (daughter of Ole Olson) was born on 13 Jan 1856 in Norway; died on 26 Aug 1913 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried on 27 Aug 1913 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Or Karen Sofia. FamilySearch Family Tree calls her Carin Sofie Ellefsen.

In the 1900 census (June 19th), Carin Wold was already a widow but had not yet married Martin Bye. She is shown as 44 (born Jan 1856) and is living with her 12 year old son Harold S. (born Mar 1888) and her 7 year old daughter Alma (born June 1892). Also living with them is 3 year-old Hilda Morstad (born May 1897) who is shown as an adopted daughter. Carin is shown as having had 5 children, two still living. The family was living at 120 or 123 Bancroft Avenue (near Channing Avenue on which some of the Byes lived) in a home that Carin owned without mortgage. No occupation is shown for Carin. She is shown has having immigrated in 1885.

Called Sophie in the city directories.

The 1910 census form says they had been married for 8 years which would put their year of marriage at 1902 or 1903. The form also says that Carin had given birth to 5 children, only two still living. (Hilda Morstad was now living with Bernard and Jennie Morstad in Minot, North Dakota. Hilda Rebekka Morstad, b. 5 May 1897 in Fergus Falls, was confirmed at First Lutheran in Minot on 28 May 1911. In her confirmation record, her parents are shown as Bernhard E. and Rina Morstad.)

Immigrated to the U.S. in 1884.

The 1910 census suggests that Carin, not Martin, owned the home that they lived in on Remington in the city of Fergus Falls (Ward 4) and that the home was free of mortgage in 1910.

She died as Karen Sophia Bye at 123 Bankroft in Fergus Falls of pulmonary tuberculosis. The informant for her death certificate was her daughter Alma.

A Karen Sophie was born in Levanger on 13 Jan 1856 (bapt. 27 Apr 1856) to Ingebrigt Olsen Østborgvald (?) and Anne Bergitte Nilsdatter.

Her gravestone has her birth date as 13 Jan 1853.

Also called Mt. Faith Cemetery. The cemetery is located off Mt. Faith Avenue. Buried with her first husband as Karen S. Wold Bye.

Notes:

FamilySearch Family Tree calls him Ole Hansen Ydse.

Although that is being assumed here, it is speculative that Ole is a son of Hans Olsen #4171.
