    Other Events and Attributes:

In the 1905 and 1909 Fergus Falls city directories, he was a clerk for E T Bernard. He lived at home at 123 Bancroft with his mother, sister, and step-father.

Living in Duluth at time of Martin Bye’s death.

.... on Eighth Street between 10th and 11th Avenues

Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Duluth. At that time he was married, had 3 children “under 12”, and was a clerk for F. A. Patrick and Co. of Duluth. He and his family were living at 132 South 28th Avenue West, Duluth.

In the 1920 census he and his family lived in Duluth. Harold was an order clerk in a wholesale dry goods company.

He was one of the jurors who heard the trial of William Miller, one of the seven black “circus hands” accused of assaulting an 18 year-old white girl in Duluth in June of 1920.

In the 1930 census, he and his family are still in Duluth. Harold (as H S) is a traveling salesman of wholesale meats and canned goods. All the children are still at home.

In the 1940 census, he and Randi and all but their two oldest children lived at 1025 Eighth Street in Duluth in a house they owned worth $3500. It was the same house at which all of them had lived in 1935. Harold was a state weigher with the Board of Trade.

His obituary was published on p. 12:5 of the September 3, 1969, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune:

Harold S. Wold, 81, of 1025 E. 8th Street, died Tuesday in a Duluth hospital. Born in Fergus Falls, he had been a Duluth resident for 60 years and an employee of the Minnesota Railroad and Warehouse Commission. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Randi; three sons, Harold, Fort Worth, Tex.; Robert, Minneapolis; Richard, San Rafael, California; five daughters, Miss Ruth Wold and Miss Louise Wold, Duluth; Mrs. Oscar (Lucille) Olson, Duluth; Mrs. Arthur (Kathryn) Bowers, Minneapolis; Mrs. James (Helen) Merrick, Glenrock, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Harold married Randi K STANGVIK. Randi (daughter of Ole Olsson STANGVIK and Marit Martinusdatter TORVIK) was born on 28 Jun 1887 in Stangvik, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 17 Jun 1977 in St. Louis County, Minnesota; was buried on 20 Jun 1977 in Park Hill, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1977-MN-015679

    Notes:

The January 9, 1954, edition of the FFDJ noted that “Miss Anna Stangvik returned the first of the week from Duluth where she was a guest of her brother-in-law and sister, Mrs. H. S. Wold and family, through the holidays.”

She is probably the Randi Stangvik, b. June 1887 in Norway, “niece”, who is living on the Ole Aarnes farm in Dane Prairie Twp, Otter Tail County, in the 1900 census. She came to the U.S. in 1897. So Randi is either the niece of Ole, born Jan 1857 in Norway, or of Ole’s wife Randi, born Apr 1869 in Norway. Ole came to the U.S. in 1881, the older Randi in 1886. Next door to the Aarnes farm is the farm of Martinus Torvik. Martin and his wife came to the U.S. in 1887. It would seem that the younger Randi is the niece of the older Randi. The older Randi is probably the Randi Martinusdatter born 22 Apr 1869 in Stangvik (bapt. 30 May) to Martinus Larson Torvik and Marie Lornsdatter.

The 9 year-old Randi Stangvig arrived in New York with her family on May 20, 1897, aboard the S.S. Aurania. The family, bound for Wadena, Minnesota, consisted of Ole O. Stangvig, 50, Marit, 46, Lars, 20, Peder, 17, John, 11, Randi, 9, and Anne 4. John and Rangdi are servants in Otter Tail County in the 1900 census.

Her daughter Louise Wold was the informant for her death certificate. Both Louise and Randi lived at 1025 E. 8th Street in Duluth. Randi died of pneumonia after a stroke brought on by diabetes and obesity.

Her obituary was published on p. 6A:3 of the June 18, 1977, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune:

Randi Wold, 89, of 1025 E. 8th St., died Friday in a Duluth hospital. Born in Stangvik, Norway, she had been a Duluth resident for 67 years. She was a member of the first graduating class of registered nurses from Wright Memorial Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She is survived by three sons, Harold, Fort Worth, Tex., Richard, San Raphael, Calif., and Robert, St. Paul; five daughters, Helen (James) Merrick, Glen Rock, Pa.; Kathryn (Arthur) Bowers, Minneapolis, and Lucille (Oscar) Olsen, and Ruth and Louise Wold, all of Duluth; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

  1. 4.  Hans Olsen WOLD was born on 11 Jan 1852 in Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway (son of Ole Hansen and Berith Olsdatter); died on 19 Sep 1897 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota; was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota.

    • Baptism: 18 Apr 1852, Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
    • Confirmation: 6 Oct 1867, Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway

    Notes:

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he is probably the Hans, age 14, no patronym, who is a servant on Maritvold 26a in Verdal.

In the 1895 census, as Hans Wald, he ran a saloon in Fergus Falls. He had been a resident of Minnesota for 13 years and had been a resident of the local area for 7 years and 10 months. The household consisted of Hans, 42, Sophie, 39, Harold, 7, and Alma, 2.

He was hospitalized in St. Paul and died after an operation.

Seems to have had an older brother, Oluf.

Hans is related to Martinus Bye or Olianna.

    Died:

Hans married Karen Sophie (Sophie) OLSON. Karen (daughter of Ole Olson) was born on 13 Jan 1856 in Norway; died on 26 Aug 1913 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried on 27 Aug 1913 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Karen Sophie (Sophie) OLSON was born on 13 Jan 1856 in Norway (daughter of Ole Olson); died on 26 Aug 1913 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried on 27 Aug 1913 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

Or Karen Sofia. FamilySearch Family Tree calls her Carin Sofie Ellefsen.

In the 1900 census (June 19th), Carin Wold was already a widow but had not yet married Martin Bye. She is shown as 44 (born Jan 1856) and is living with her 12 year old son Harold S. (born Mar 1888) and her 7 year old daughter Alma (born June 1892). Also living with them is 3 year-old Hilda Morstad (born May 1897) who is shown as an adopted daughter. Carin is shown as having had 5 children, two still living. The family was living at 120 or 123 Bancroft Avenue (near Channing Avenue on which some of the Byes lived) in a home that Carin owned without mortgage. No occupation is shown for Carin. She is shown has having immigrated in 1885.

Called Sophie in the city directories.

The 1910 census form says they had been married for 8 years which would put their year of marriage at 1902 or 1903. The form also says that Carin had given birth to 5 children, only two still living. (Hilda Morstad was now living with Bernard and Jennie Morstad in Minot, North Dakota. Hilda Rebekka Morstad, b. 5 May 1897 in Fergus Falls, was confirmed at First Lutheran in Minot on 28 May 1911. In her confirmation record, her parents are shown as Bernhard E. and Rina Morstad.)

Immigrated to the U.S. in 1884.

The 1910 census suggests that Carin, not Martin, owned the home that they lived in on Remington in the city of Fergus Falls (Ward 4) and that the home was free of mortgage in 1910.
