    • Baptism: 5 Aug 1883, Bremsnes, Kvernes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

He is called Rudolf Sæther in the Kristiansund emigration records for his departure with his sister and mother on May 4, 1887.

Mother’s maiden name shown as “Gaustad” in the death records.

A Rudolph Rasmuson, born in June of 1883, was shown in the 1900 census as a servant (“hostler”) at an Aitkin hotel apparently run by John O’Maley. This Rudolph is shown as having come to this country in 1892.

In the 1901 Superior city directory he is shown as Rudolph Rasmussen, “appr” at Superior Ship Bldg. Co, the employer of his father.

In the 1905 state census, he is living in Superior with Peter and Mary. He is 23 and a machinist.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he may be the Rudolph Rasmussen, machinist, living at 716 21st Avenue S.

He is the Rudolph Resmussen, 27, living in Minneapolis at 2411 Sixth Street in the 1910 census. At that point, he had been married for two years to a 21 year old woman named Emma, of Swedish extraction. They had had no children. He was a machinist. Couldn’t read the year in which he emigrated.

Registered for the draft in Milwaukee on September 12, 1918, as Rudolf Rasmussen. He is 35, born June 18, 1883, and is a superintendent at Worthington Pump & Machinery (or Manufacturing) in Cudahy. His closest relative is Emma Rasmussen, wife, living with him at 229 Mason in Milwaukee. He is described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and light brown hair. He claims that one of (both right and left are written) his eyes is “defective.”

In the 1919 Minneapolis city directory, he is a superintendent living at 401 S E 4th Street.

In the 1920 census, he is living at 401 4th Street S. E. in Minneapolis. His trade or occupation is not legible but he works in the auto industry. The family consists of Rudolph Rassmuson, 34, who came to this country from Norway in 1890, Emma, 30, born in Sweden, and their son, Russel, 8, born in Minnesota.

Probably the 46 year old lodger, machinist for an agricultural implement company, divorced, and living in Minneapolis as Rudolf Rasmussen in the 1930 census. He came to this country in 1886. His address appears to be 327 14th Avenue S. E.

In the 1940 census, he and Alice live at 2843 Williams Avenue in Minneapolis in a house they own that is worth $2800. They lived at a different residence in Minneapolis in 1935. Rudolf is a machinist for a farm machinery manufacturing company. He earned $1680 in 1939. Rudolf had a 6th grade education, Alice had had two years of high school.

His obit says that he was a Minneapolis resident for 47 years and a member of Augustana Lutheran Church for 25 years. He had been a machinist for Minneapolis-Moline and was a member of the Superior, Wisconsin, masonic lodge and the Scottish Rite in Minneapolis. There is no mention of his son Russell in his obit. There is, however, mention of a Mrs. Bertha Murphy, of Minneapolis, referred to as Rudolf’s sister. Other sisters mentioned as surviving him are Mrs. Nellie Petersen, Mrs. Gyda Tollefseon, and Mrs. Ruth Kamps.

The informant for his death certificate was his wife Alice L. They resided at 2843 Williams Ave. S.E. Rudolf had been a machinist for Minneapolis Moline. He died of pneumonia.

    Birth:
Odd has him born Rudolf Sæther in 1884

    Died:

  1. 2.  Peder (Peter) Rasmussen RØD was born on 13 Sep 1854 in Øre, Tingvoll, Møre og Romsdal, Norway (son of Rasmus Eriksen RØD and Marit Olsdatter); died on 28 May 1924 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 30 May 1924 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1924-MN-019272
    • Confirmation: 13 Nov 1870, Øre, Tingvoll, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

May be the 13 year-old Peter Rasmussen, goat herder, on the Grønsæt farm in Kvernes in the 1865 census. He was born in Thingvolds.

Odd says Peder was born on 14 Sep 1854 in Batnfjord.

According to his confirmation record, Peter was vaccinated on 25 September 1855.

The “Øre in Tingvoll” emigration record shows him transferring to the Kvernes parish in 1883, just before his marriage. (He left Øre as an unmarried man but was leaving Øre due to his marriage.) That church book entry also shows his birth date as September 13th.

He was Peder Rassmussen Rød Kristvik in Rudolf’s birth record. He was still on Kristvik when Mary was born, according to her birth record.

In his daughter Maria’s birth record his occupation is shown as Maskinist.

This is probably his entry in the 1887-1888 Duluth city directory: Rasmussen Peter, blacksmith National Iron Works, res 823 E Third.

His entries in the 1888-1889 and 1889-1890 Duluth city directories: Rasmussen Peter, blacksmith, res 619 E 10th.

His entry in the 1890-91 Duluth city directory: Rasmussen Peter, mach The Clyde Iron Co, res 619 E 10th.

In the 1891-1892 Duluth city directory he is Peter Rasmussen mchn Clyde Iron Co, res 619 E 10th.

His entry in the 1892-1893 Duluth city directory: Rasmussen Peter, lab, res 619 E 10th.

In the 1893-1894 city directory he is mach Clyde Iron Co, res 609 E 10th.

The pages in which he would be listed are missing from the on-line version of the 1894-1895 Duluth city directory.

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, Peter and family are living in Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, with or next to, all of the Eversons and Gustads. Peter’s household consists of Peter, 40, Maria, 28, Rudolph, 12, Einard, 7, Maria, 10, Artor, 6, Edvin, 2, and Nellie, 1. Peter is shown as having been in the state for 9 years (probably true) and in the present enumeration district for 8 years (not true, probably only 1 -- perhaps the census enumerator meant 8 months).

He is not listed in the 1899 Superior city directory.

In the 1900 Superior city directory, he is Peter Rasmussen, mach Superior Ship Bldg Co, r 724 N 4th.

Living in the 5th ward of Superior at 724 Fourth in the 1900 census. Peter is a 45 year old machinist. Living with him and Mary are Aner, 12, Edwin, 7, Nellie, 6, Geda, 3, and Carl, 1. All of the children are shown as born in Minnesota. His older children are not listed as living with him.

In the 1901 Superior city directory he is Peter Rasmussen, mach Superior Ship Bldg Co, r 432 Clough Av. His daughter Mary is a seamstress at that same address.

Living in the 5th ward (”N of Broadway”) of Superior in the 1905 state census (nominally June 1st). The family consisted of Peter, 50, a machinist born in Norway; Mary 38, his wife, also born in Norway; Rudolf, 23, a machinist born in Norway; Iver, 18, a laborer born in Minnesota; Arthur, 15, a rivet heater born in Minnesota; Edwin, 12, born in Minnesota; Nellie, 11, born in Minnesota; Geda, a daughter, 8 and born in Minnesota; Ruth, 2, born in Wisconsin; and Mabel, 3 months, born in Wisconsin. The census only says that the parents of all of the children were born in Norway.

In the 1907 Superior city directory, he was a machinist for Superior Ship B Co. He resided at 820 N 5th. His son Rudolph also resides at that address as does Mary, probably his wife.

In the 1909 Superior city directory, he was a machinist at Superior Ship Building Co. He boarded at 419 Cumming Av.

Living in the 3rd ward of Superior at 620 French Ave. in the 1910 census. He is shown as having come to this country in 1894 and is a machinist.

Appears to be the Theo Rasmussen, 65, living in Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, in the 1920 census. Living with him is his wife Mary, 51, and their daughter Ruth, 15. Theo and Mary were born in Norway, Ruth was born in Wisconsin. They also have Elsie Spaulding, a school teacher, boarding with them. Next door lives Iver Everson and his wife Benta and Iver’s brother Halvor. From the 1916 Aitkin County plat map, we can see that the Rasmussen farm was the 40 acres immediate south of the Mackaman farm. The Rasmussen farm was the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 5, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County.

The informant for Peter’s death certificate was his wife Mrs. Mary Rasmussen of Aitkin. Peter’s usual residence was Aitkin. He died from chronic myocarditis at 3856 29th Avenue South in Minneapolis.

    Birth:
Other sources say September 14th. The birthdate for Peter in his confirmation record is September 13th. “Batnfjord” is the location according to Odd; that is probably a place in or near Gjemnes (which, in turn, was created in 1893 from parts of Kvernes, Øre, and Frei).

Peder married Ellen Eriksdatter GUSTAD on 1 May 1883 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Ellen (daughter of Erik Ingebrigtsen FLAAHAMMER and Ane Arntsdatter VINJE) was born on 30 Jan 1862 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; was christened on 17 Apr 1862 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 19 Mar 1891 in St. Louis County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Ellen Eriksdatter GUSTAD was born on 30 Jan 1862 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; was christened on 17 Apr 1862 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway (daughter of Erik Ingebrigtsen FLAAHAMMER and Ane Arntsdatter VINJE); died on 19 Mar 1891 in St. Louis County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 17 Apr 1862, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
    • Confirmation: 7 Oct 1877, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

In the 1865 census, shown as Elen Eriksdatter, born in 1862 in Qværnæs.

Shown in the parish record as the daughter of Erik Ingebrigtsen and “Ane Hansdatter.”

Elen Rasmussen Gustad from Kvernes, b. 1863 and married, emigrated with her two children from Kristiansund on 4 May 1887 aboard an American liner, bound for Minnesota.

Because Annie Gustad claimed to have had 7 children, 5 still living, at the time of the 1900 census, Ellen must have died before 1900.

An Ellen Rasmussen died in St. Louis County in 1891:

    RASMUSSON ELLEN NA 03/19/1891 102

Called Mary, the name of his father’s second wife, in Eaner’s marriage record.

    Birth:
Odd has her birthplace as Halvorstua, Bådalen, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal

    Died:
    indexed as Ellen Rasmusson

    Children:
    1. 1. Rudolf (Rudy) RASMUSSEN was born on 18 Jun 1883 in Bremsnes, Kvernes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 11 Nov 1965 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 15 Nov 1965 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Rasmus Eriksen RØD

    Notes:

He was a husmann according to Peter’s confirmation record.

Rasmus married Marit Olsdatter. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Marit Olsdatter
    Children:
    1. 2. Peder (Peter) Rasmussen RØD was born on 13 Sep 1854 in Øre, Tingvoll, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 28 May 1924 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 30 May 1924 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

  3. 6.  Erik Ingebrigtsen FLAAHAMMER was born on 21 Nov 1829 in Rød, Næssæt, Møre og Romsdal, Norway (son of Ingebrigt Ericksen FLAAHAMMER and Anne Pedersdatter); died on 24 Feb 1913 in Cuyuna, Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 26 Feb 1913 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1913-MN-002953
    • Occupation: Gaardbruger Selveier, Fisherman
    • Baptism: 6 Dec 1829, Næssæt, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

Shown as Erik Ingebrigtsen, the Husfader of the Gustad domicile in Kvernes in the 1865 census. His year of birth is shown as 1830, from Næssæt. The November, 1829, date comes from the parish birth record for Rød, Nesset which also shows a farm name of Flaahammer (as does the record for his marriage to Ane).

Erik is shown as the owner (”Gaardbruger Selveier”) of the farm (on 216, Gustad) in the 1865 census. However, in the 1886 land register, H. Iversen is listed as the “land owner or user” of the holding (16-6, old 127-216a) on Gulstad (”commonly written Gustad”) in Kvernes. This suggests that primogeniture prevailed and that Halvor inherited the farm after his father perished. Perhaps Erik and/or Ane held the property in trust until Halvor reached majority. This possibility may be consistent with the 1891 census in which Erik is called “Føderådsmand og bruger.”

Erik Ingebrigtsen Gustad of Kvernes, age 65 and born 1829 and a farmer, emigrated from Kristiansund on 2 August 1894 aboard a Dominion liner, bound for Minnesota. Accompanying him were his 65 year-old wife, Anne, his 41 year-old son, a laborer, Halvor, 24 year-old Lise Gustad, an unmarried maid, and 23 year-old Petrine Gustad, an unmarried maid.

Five Gustads arrived in Quebec (Quebec City or Montreal) in August of 1894 aboard the S.S. Vancouver which had sailed from Liverpool. The destination of all five was “Aitken, Minnesota.” The five were: E. Gustad, a 65 year-old male, A. Gustad, a 65 year-old female, “wife”, H. Gustad, a 41 year-old male laborer, L. Gustad, a 24 year-old female “servant”, and P. Gustad, a 28 year-old female “servant.”

According to his death certificate, the informant was Dr. Sewall of Crosby, the doctor who treated him. Sewall indicated that Erik died of old age.

    Birth:
His death certificate indicated that he was born on the 22nd. Ole Weflaat calls him Erik Flåhammer (Rød).

Erik married Ane Arntsdatter VINJE on 22 Jul 1861 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Ane (daughter of Arne Andersen VINJE and Eli Olsdatter) was born on 6 Nov 1828 in Grytten, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 7 Aug 1914 in Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 9 Aug 1914 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Ane Arntsdatter VINJEAne Arntsdatter VINJE was born on 6 Nov 1828 in Grytten, Møre og Romsdal, Norway (daughter of Arne Andersen VINJE and Eli Olsdatter); died on 7 Aug 1914 in Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 9 Aug 1914 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1914-MN-003173
    • Baptism: 7 Jan 1829, Grytten, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
    • Confirmation: 20 Oct 1843, Grytten, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

She was shown as Ane Arnesdatter Vinje, age 25, of Grytten, when she married.

In the 1865 census, shown as Ane Arndtsdatter, born in 1830 in Gryttens.

In the Grytten records, an Anne Arnesdatter Vinje was confirmed October 20, 1843. This Anne was born 6 Nov 1828. This Anne was born of Arne Anderssen and Eli Olsdatter in Tiva (or Fiva?).

In the IGI, through FamilySearch.com, as the mother of Anders Iversen, she is shown as Ane Arnesdatter.

Called Ane Arneson in the marriage record of Andrew and Annie.

Emigrated to the U.S. in 1894 according to the 1900 census.

In the 1895 state census, the newly-arrived Erick and Anna were living with their son Edvard and wife as well as the Rasmussens and the Eversons in Farm Island Twp.

In the 1900 census, Annie (69, born in January of 1831) and Erick (70, born in April of 1830) were living with son Edward and next door to son Ever in Farm Island township in Aitkin County. They are shown as having been married for 40 years. Annie is shown as having borne 7 children, 5 still living. (The dead ones must have been daughters Ellen and Anna.) In the 1900 census, Annie is shown as being unable to read or write or to speak English. Erick can’t read or write either but can speak English. Erick is shown as “fisherman.” Also living with Edward Gustad at the time of the 1900 census is a 25 year old man named Charles Gustad and shown as “brother.” Perhaps this was Elise Gustad’s brother and the indication of Gustad as his last name is in error.

In the 1905 state census, the Gustads are in Farm Island, living next door to the Mackamans. The household consists of Edd, 39, Elisa, 39, Margett, 7, Agnes, 9 months, Erick, 76, and Anna, 76. Ed is a carpenter. He had been in the state for 14 years and in the present enumeration district for 12 years. For Elisa, Erick, and Anna those numbers are 11 and 11.

Annie and Erick are still living with son Edward and family at the time of the 1910 census in April but they have now moved to Rabbit Lake Twp in Crow Wing County. Anna is shown as having been married for 48 years which would put their marriage in 1861 or early 1862 instead of the 1860 suggested in the 1900 census. In the 1910 census, both Erick and Anna are shown as being able to read and write but they speak Norwegian and not English. In this census, Anna is also shown as having had 7 children, 5 still living.

Her death certificate gave the cause of death as senile debility.

    Birth:
Born and baptized in Tiva or Fiva, Grytten sub-parish of Grytten parish. The 1875 census has her place of birth as “Rø Sogn Næsset Prgj.” That is the birthplace of Erik Ingebrigtsen. The census enumerator, or the scribe, got the two locations mixed up.

    Died:
her death certificate shows her date of birth as November 6, 1829

    Children:
    1. 3. Ellen Eriksdatter GUSTAD was born on 30 Jan 1862 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; was christened on 17 Apr 1862 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 19 Mar 1891 in St. Louis County, Minnesota.
