Came to the U.S. in 1865. In the 1870 census, he is John Thomson, a farmer in Eaton Twp, Manitowoc County. He is J Thompson in Eaton in the 1880 census (where he is erroneously shown as born in Wisconsin). In the 1880 census, all children were still single and living at home on the farm.

He lived in various places in Øystre Slidre, -- at Alfstad in 1787 and at Sæle in 1791, and didn't come to Sannes before ca.1793-1794. He was then a man in his 60's. In the 1801 Census he is 64 years old, in first marriage with Rangdi Tostensdotter, age 49, with three daughters -- Sigre (13), Inge (10) and Ragnild (6).,

The French Family Tree has him as Iver Knudsen Skammestein, b. 19 Dec 1739 in Skammesteen, Hegge.

She is the second Ragnhild born to Torsten and Marit. The first was born and died in 1745.

The French Family Tree disagrees entirely with the ancestry of Ragnild shown here. dwfrench1 calls her Ragnild Tostensdatter Dahle, b. 1753 in Skolte in Dale in Hegge, with her parents being Tosten Findsen Dahle (1716-1755) and Sigrid Nielsdatter Skolt (1719-1782).

Han skal ha skutt en bjørn. Det fortelles at en gutt frahovedbole på Windingstad kom til Maradokke og skulle hente enhest som gikk der med et foll. Da han kom dit så han en bjørnsom å† og åt på follet. Gutten ble livredd og kom seg opp i ettre og ropte så hoyt han kunne: "Lars, Lars kom og skyt'n" Larsi Bakka horte ropene og fikk skutt Bjørnen og reddet livet tilgutten. Noen forteller historien litt annerledes, bl.a. slikat Lars brukte follet som bjørnen hadde drept som åte på, ogdermed fikk has på bamsen

Her parentage was confusing to Jim and he showed no parents for her in his tree but did offer this comment:

“She was listed as 50 years old in the 1801 census, indicating that she was born in about 1750 - 1751, but listed as age 56 at time of death in 1813, indicating that she was born in 1757.

“On p. 658 of V&S a Lars Olsen Veningstad is said to have married Kari, who is said to have been a daughter of Gølik Knutson Lien (nørre I) and Kari Hansdotter [Beito?] (her second marriage). But -- the engagement record for Lars Olsen and Kari in 1784 gives her father's name as Thorsten, and all the baptism records for her children give her name as Thorsten (Tosten). Could she have been a daughter from the first marriage of Kari Hansdotter or could Tore Ey just be wrong about her father's name? Lars' mother was from Løken, where the church book record states that Lars and Kari were engaged.

“From naming tradition, her mother's name was probably Berit. I could find only two couples by the names of Tosten and Berit who were having children in this time period in Slidre -- Torsten Johanneson Bettoe and Beraette Laersdotter, and Torsten Knutson Bettoe and Beraette Gudliksdotter. Only two church book entries for baptisms were found for each of these couples, but neither was for a daughter named Kari. It is likely that there were more children who were not recorded.”
