RED LODGE — Marilyn "Lyn" Herem, 84, of Red Lodge, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, in Billings. She lived a full life as a servant to God, family and friends until ill health slowed her down. Born June 26, 1926, as the middle child of nine, she grew up on a farm near Pelican Rapids, Minn. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class.

After World War II, she met a wild Montana cowboy named Al. They married in 1951 and moved to a ranch in Miles City. There, they had two sons: Gary and John. In 1959, they moved to Red Lodge, where they built a log home from scratch. Al and Lyn lived the rest of their lives in Red Lodge until their health needs meant moving to assisted living in Billings.

Lyn spent her entire life caring for others. She enjoyed volunteering for charitable causes. She devoted her life to her family and to serving God through her church, Messiah Lutheran in Red Lodge. She remained close with her Minnesota family her entire life. Lyn loved gardening, fishing, snowmobiling and any other outdoor activity. She belonged to a women's hiking club for many years. She also loved to ride double on Al's motorcycles (although she refused to ride through a firewall with him for their 50th anniversary!). Harley riders from all over the United States would stop in at their place, knowing they could camp in the backyard and enjoy one of Lyn's delicious meals. She had a wonderful gift of hospitality.

A pure Norwegian, Lyn belonged to a Scandinavian dance group that performed throughout Montana as well as each August for the Red Lodge Festival of Nations. She had a reputation for beautiful needlework and crafted many quilts and bunads (Norwegian costumes). She loved Norwegian baking. Tourists enjoyed watching her make lefse on Main Street during Festival — and sampling the results.

Lyn was preceded in death by her husband, Al, in April 2010. She is survived by son Gary (and Jo Anne) of Billings and their children, Michael of Billings and Rebecca of Seattle; and son John (and Mary) of Tacoma, Wash., and their daughter, Alicia (and Conor) Buechler, of Glen Cove, N.Y. Lyn has four surviving siblings (Ervin Toso, Duane Toso, Darlene Rustad, and Neil Toso) of Minnesota, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.

He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, as Martin Toso of Lidgerwood. He is a farmer employed by A. E. Otterburn of Dexter. He is married with a wife and child. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

In the rural part of the 1937/38 Fergus Falls city directory, he is probably the Martin Toso who owns 198 acres of sections 18 and 19 of Maplewood Twp.

Martin married Mabel WEIK. Mabel was born on 16 Apr 1894 in Minnesota; died on 21 Jul 1948 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried in Bagstevold Norwegian Cemetery, Erhards Grove, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the rural part of the 1937/38 Fergus Falls city directory, she may be the Mabel Toso who, with others, is the absentee owner of 200 acres in sections 11 and 12 of Trondhjem Twp.

In the 1900 census, Christ and his family were farming in Maplewood Twp, Otter Tail County. Christ came to the U.S. in 1880, his wife Maria in 1881.

The family lived at Rt #7, Erhard, Otter Tail County, at the time of Mabel’s death in 1920. Christ was the informant for Mabel’s death certificate.

In the rural part of the 1937/38 Fergus Falls city directory, he may be the C A Toso who owns 80 acres in section 19 of Maplewood Twp.

In the 1940 census, he lives with his son Henry.

Maria (daughter of Eric Johnsen FRÖSLIEJE and Siri OLSDATTER) was born on 3 Nov 1860 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway; died on 26 Apr 1938 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried in Maplewood Lutheran Cemetery, Erhard, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. According to Marilee, Anders took the surname Toso from a glassblower that he apprenticed under while in Norway. His original farm in Otter Tail County is still in the family.

Some sources say he was born in Hallingdal, Buskerud.

In the 1865 census, Anders and family lived on the Brænna farm (apparently not far from the Nordthosø farm of Jens Torgerson) in Jevnaker, Oppland. The family consisted of Anders Hansen, husmand med jord (tenant farmer with some land), b. 1821 in Jevnaker, Randi Olsdatter, b. 1821 in Flo, Hallingdal, and their three sons, all born in Jevnaker: Hans Andersen, skrædder (tailor), b. 1845, Ole Andersen, b. 1851, and Martin Andersen, b. 1861.

Anders married Randi Maria Olsdatter BRENNA on 20 Jun 1846 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway. Randi (daughter of Ole Engebretsen) was born about 1818 in Hallingdal region, Buskerud, Norway; died on 2 Jun 1869 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
