    Notes:

    Or Søyne.

Vang A, p. 852, only mentions her marriage to Per Toresson in 1858.

She is I17762 in Jim’s VS. He shows her as marrying Per Toresen Tynjum of Lærdal.

She is I8260 in Jim’s Ellingboe tree. Jim’s notes there: She had at least two illegitimate children with Ola Christopherson Kvåle (Marit and Tosten) before she married farm laborer Per Toresson Tynjadn from Lærdal.

    Birth:
    Søyne 50/

Family/Spouse: Ole Christophersson QVÅLE. Ole (son of Kristoffer Torsteinsen KVÅLE and Berit Knutsdatter BØE) was born in 1809 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1903 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 10 May 1835, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

She is Marit Olsdatter Lajord (#I22262) in Jim’s Valdres Slekt tree. In that tree, her parents are Ola Christopherson Kvåle (1809-1903) and Berit Torsteinsdatter Kattevold (1821-1885).

She is Marit Olsdatter Qvale, #I8255, in Jim’s Ellingboe tree. In that tree, her parents are Ole Christopherson Qvale (1809-1903) and Kjersti Simonsdatter Søyne (1812-1864).

The Ellingboe tree record is the more recently modified, suggesting that it is more authoritative. The Vang birth record confirms that Marith was the daughter of the unmarried couple Ole Christopherson Qvale and Kirsti Simonsdatter Lajord.

Jim’s notes for Marit in his Ellingboe tree:

Marit was the illegitimate daughter of Ole Christopherson Kvåle and Kirsti Simonsdatter Lajord (or Søyne), according to the Vang church books, but I could not find anything about this in Anders Frøholm's Vang A.

The emigration records for Vang show that on 22 Mar 1862, Marith Olsdotter Ellingböe, widow, age 27, intended to travel to America with her two sons, Ole Olson (age 6) and Jörgen Olson (age 4). Marit was married in 1857 to Ola Jørnsson (born 1831, died between 1859 and 1862), who farmed a piece of land called "Plassen, Nørre Plassen or Jørnplassen, under Ellingbø, Nigarden, no. 33/1.”

According to the 1885 Minnesota census, her son Andrew was born in Ontario, although Arta Juneau believes that he was born soon after Marit's arrival in Northfield, Minnesota, where her brother Tosten Quamme was already living. Apparently she never remarried and had a difficult life, dying in her sixties.

Marith, 27 a widow, Ole, 6, and Jørgen, 4, left Vang for Amerika on March 22, 1862, through Bergen. This was the same day that Thrond Iverson Ellingboe (#3164) left Vang for America with his family. In Marit’s emigration record there is no mention of Andrew. In a Norway Lake church record, Marit, as Ole’s mother, is reported to have come to Goodhue County in 1862 and to Norway Lake in 1868.

Could not find an entry for Andrew’s birth in the Vang parish record.

In the 1870 census, Mary and her three boys are living on the Cal Johnson farm in Benson Twp, Chippewa County, Minnesota.

In the 1875 Minnesota census, she is Mary Olsen, 29, living with her three boys in Kerkhoven Twp, Swift County.

In the 1880 census, Marit and her three boys are living on the V. J. Finstad farm in Kerkhoven Twp. George, 21, is “teaching.” Also living on that farm were Marit Ellingboe, a 46 year-old widow, “housekeeper”, and Marit’s two sons, Ole, 23, and Andew, 18. All four of these Ellingboes were born in Norway.

In the 1885 census she is living in Kerkhoven Twp with her sons Ole, 28, and Anders, 22, as well as Erland Johnson, 21, of Norway. Anders is shown as born in Ontario.

There is a gravestone for Marith O. Ellingboe in the Sunburg cemetery that provides the 1885 death date.

She was a charter member of West Norway Lake Lutheran Church.

    Buried:
    Norway Lake

Marit married Ola Jørgensson ELLINGBØ on 20 Oct 1857 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. Ola (son of Jørgen Evensson ELLINGBÖ and Anne Thomasdatter HAGASTRØND) was born in 1831 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died before 1862 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 5. Ole O ELLINGBOE  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 8 Sep 1856 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 1 Sep 1929 in Kerkhoven, Swift County, Minnesota; was buried in Monson Lake Cemetery, Sunburg, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota.
    2. 6. Jørgen (George) O ELLINGBØ  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 31 Jan 1859 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 15 Aug 1926 in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Sunburg, Norway Lake Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota.

Family/Spouse: Unknown Anders. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Baptism: 27 Jun 1841, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

From Carole H.’s write-up for the Norway Lake church’s history:

Tosten Olson Quamme and Marit Tostendatter Sondrol, Charter Members West Norway Lake Lutheran

Tosten Olson was born 19 June 1841 in Vang Parish, Valdres Norway to Ole Christopherson Qvale [1809-1903] and Kjersti Simonsdatter [1812-1864]. He had one sister Marit born in 1836.

Tosten emigrated in 1864. He first settled in Rice County. In 1867 he was one of a group of Valdres Norwegians who settled in “Valdres Prairie” now known as Kerkhoven Township in the north east corner of Swift County.

Tosten married Marit Tostendatter in 1867. Carole H notes that “There were two Marit Tostensdatters of nearly the same age and place of birth. The ELCA funeral entry has a birth date matching neither of the two. Ultimately, it was the orderly old Norwegian convention for naming children that favored the Marit listed above.”

    {We don’t know who Tosten married. The Marit Tostensdatters born in those years are all accounted for. The estimable dwfrench1 has no information on Tosten O’s wife other than that she was a Marit T. and lived ca 1845 to 2 May 1903. He has her as born in Minnesota which seem unlikely.}

    This Marit was the daughter of Tosten Knudsen and Marith Olsdatter. She was born 1 April 1845 in Vang, Valdres Norway. The farm name was Sondrohl. Marit emigrated 12 April 1865 as Marit Tostendatter Sondrol. She may have come to marry Tosten. {The 1865 out-migration record is not available on Digitalarkivet.}

Tosten and Marit settled on 160 acres in Section 26 [NE 1?4]. They also owned acreage in Section 23. 80 acres in N1/2 of SE 1/4, 40 acres in NE 1/4 of SW1/4 and 40 in SE 1/4 of NW 1/4. I could not find the homestead records for any of the properties. Tosten and Marit remained on this land until their deaths.

Tosten and Marit had 10 children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood. All the children were born after the move to Kerkhoven Township and all were baptized at West Norway Lake Lutheran.

    10. Matthea:born 7 Dec 1889, died 5 Feb 1949, married Peter LeClair

In 1876 a school was established in the north east corner of Section 26. It was known as Quamme School.

Tosten and Marit are in the 1875 census as Olsens but by the 1880 census they are using Quamme. He adopted this name from the farm in Norway, Kvamme Gard, where he last worked.

Tosten passed away 16 May 1899 at the age of 57. The cause of death was stomach trouble lasting several years. Funeral services were held at West Norway Lake Lutheran, Rev Jordahl officiating. He was buried in the Monson Lake Cemetery. Marit passed away 2 May 1903 and was also buried at Monson Lake Cemetery, again after services at West Norway Lake Lutheran.

According to the 1907 plat map, after Marit’s death Simon and Martin each inherited 80 acres in Section 26. Tosten received 40 acres contiguous to land he owned in Section 23.

Tosten’s sister Marit Olsdatter Ellingboe was also a charter member of West Norway Lake Lutheran.

Family/Spouse: Marit. Marit died on 2 May 1903 in Swift County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He was George Ellingboe, 21, “teaching”, living on the V. J. Finstad farm in Kerkhoven Twp in the 1880 census. Also living on that farm were Marit Ellingboe, a 46 year-old widow, “housekeeper”, and Marit’s two sons, Ole, 23, and Andrew, 18. All four of these Ellingboes were born in Norway.

In the 1885 census, he is G. O. Ellingboe in Pillsbury Twp, Swift County.

In the 1895 census he is George Ellingboe and has remarried and is in Kerkhoven Twp.

The November 23, 1897, edition of the Willmar Tribune says that George Ellingboe moved his family to Mille Lacs, Minnesota. In March of 1898, that paper noted that George was on his way to Aitkin County.

In the 1905 state census he and his family live in Lake George Twp, Stearns County.

Land records show that the St. Cloud land office issued a 153.67 acre homestead in Section 2 of Aitkin County to a George O Ellingboe on 14 Jun 1904. The land description is as follows:

    1 E½NE 4TH PM No 44 N 24 W
    2 SWNE 4TH PM No 44 N 24 W
    3 SENW 4TH PM No 44 N 24 W

In the 1910 census, he was a farmer in Crow River Twp, Stearns County. Living with the family is Sarah’s mother, Signe or Sigre Handa or Handr. The Hande site says that George purchased land in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, in 1906.

George moved his family to Canada in 1911. In the 1916 Canadian census, he is George C Ellingboe, age 57, living with his family in “22, 32, 1, Churchbridge” in the province of Saskatchewan, district of “28 Saltcoats.” Living with him is Sarah, 43, Josef S, 13, Verda, 17, Harry C, 19, William R, 8, Mildred J, 11, and Marcus S, 1.

In a Minnesota Valley history, he seems to be referred to as “Professor.” Here is his entry in the “History of the Minnesota Valley”, published in 1882, for Swift County:

Ellingboe, George O., Professor. Professor George O. Ellingboe was born January 29, 1859, in Norway. His father died and he came with his mother to America in 1862; the family resided in Goodhue County, Minnesota, five years and since that have been in Kerkhoven. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Confirmation: 3 Jun 1877, East Norway Lake Lutheran Church, Pennock, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota

    Notes:

Not listed in the Vang births.

According to Jim’s source, Andrew was baptized with the patronym Andersen which indicates that Andrew was not the son of Ola Jørgensson.

Jim’s notes for Andrew in his Ellingboe tree:

There is no record in the Vang church books for the birth of Anders.

In the 1865 Census of Minnesota, he is listed as Anders Andersen, while his brothers Ole and Jørgen are listed with their mother under the name Jørgensen. Also, in the christening record for Anders, which was found in the Vang Church (Holden Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota) by Curt , his name is listed as Anders Andersen. This very deliberate distinction in his name is strong evidence that Ole Jørgensen was not his father and that an unknown Anders was his father. It is likely that widow Marith and her children emigrated because she was obviously pregnant and was not going to marry the father of Anders. It would be difficult to hazard a guess as to who the father of Anders was because there were many men by the name of Anders in Vang at this time.

In the 1875 Census of Minnesota, he is listed as Anders Olsen, age 13, with mother Mary Olsen, age 39, brothers Ole, age 18, and Jorgen, age 15. All were listed as having been born in Norway.

The 1885 Census of Minnesota lists the family under the surname Ellingboe, with mother Marit Ellingboe, age 49, born in Norway, Ole Ellingboe, age 28, born in Norway, and Anders, age 22, born in Ontario. It would seem that he was born while his mother and brothers were immigrating to Minnesota, probably by way of the port of Quebec. Arta believes that he was born soon after Marit's arrival in Northfield, Minnesota, where her brother Tosten Quamme was already living.

According to Arta , Andrew had three daughters and one son, Arthur. He left his wife when the children were ages 1-4 and married again about 14 years later. His second marriage produced one daughter who was living at the age of 97 in 2000.

In the 1885 census he living with his brother Ole and Marit in Kerkhoven Twp (Lake Johanna P.O.). He is shown as age 22, born in Ontario. He was apparently born during his mother’s journey from Norway to Minnesota.

His father was born in Norway. His mother may have been too but the 1910 census for Andrew claims that his mother spoke Swedish.

In the 1895 census he was 29 and was some kind of an engineer living in a hotel in West Minneapolis.

He is listed in the 1895-1896 Minneapolis city directory as Andrew Ellingboe, machinist, Minneapolis Threshing Machine Co., resides in Hopkins. (The Minneapolis Threshing Machine Co. was a predecessor to the Minneapolis-Moline Co.)

Presumably, he is the Andrew O Ellingboe mentioned in the March 24, 1896, edition of the Willmar Tribune as having “devoted much of his time this winter in the buying of stock.”

In the 1900 census, indexed as Andrew Elingbor, he is a 35-year old single engineer boarding with the Robert Nelson family in Brainerd.

In the 1903 Brainerd city directory, he was an employee of C E Peabody. He and Annie resided at 1324 E Pine Street.

In the 1905 census he and his family live at 1320 Pine Street in Brainerd. He is a bartender.
