Ved siden av ordførervervet, som han hadde i mange år, var han dokumentskriver og forlikskommisær. Han ble syk etter et bryllup sør i bygda, hvor han fikk for mye å drikke og døde av det. Med andre ord drakk han seg nok ihjel på dårlig hjemmebrent. Om de andre barna se merknad under kona Sigrid. Han var åttende ordføreren i Vang og den første som hadde hvervet mer enn i tre år. Han satt som ordfører til 1861, da Nils Thune overtok hvervet.

De fleste av barna dro til USA i 1868, de andre fulgte etter i 1876. De første må altså kalles de virkelige pionerer. De fleste ble farmere. Se fil USA OBW (Wangensteen-Slægten) skriver om Nils: "Vistnok med fuld Grund er det sagt at Wangensteenslægten er en åndskraftig Slægt og at enkelte af dens Medlemmer er høit begavede Mennesker Nils Wangensteen Stele må således i første Rekke nævnes blandt dem, som har raget høiest i Begavelse og Kundskaber. Han var i Årrækker Formandskabets Ordfører, Forligelseskommisær samt privat Brev- og Dokumentskriver for hver den, som trængte til hans Bistand. Han skrev et Indhold lige så godt som en Jurist og hans Håndskrift var meget vakker. Men hvad de kommunale Gjøremål angik, så afløstes han af sin Slægtning Nils Thune. Det var ingen annen Råd. Endeligt kom det sidste og skjæbnesvangre Tillfælde. Det var et Bryllup syd i Bygden og mer end nok af sterke Drikke. Så skrantet Nils Steile og var sykelig en kort Tid, indtil Døden gjorde en Ende på den før såvel legemlig som åndelig kjæmpesterke Mand. 54 År gammel"

Dette tyder på at han var alkoholiker?OBW hentyder ofte at lensmennene reiste vidt omkring og hvor de kom fikk de en "sjenk", derfor ble de ofte litt for glade i "det sterke".

Frøholm skriver:"Han var på Berge ikring 1840, men overtok garden her i 1842. Han ble sjuk etter et bryllaup sør i bygda, der det var mykje sterk drykk."(Dette kan også tyde på at han fikk i seg dårlig hjemmebrent og døde av det!)

Sigrid og Nils hadde også disse barna: Maren død lietn Maren (1842- ) gm Ole I Flaten (1842- ) de giftet seg i 1865 og dro til USA. Der ble han bokholder.

OBW (Wangensteen-Slægten) skriver om ham: "Som Ældste Søn var han odelsberettiget til Kvam. Hvad Evner m.v angår så var han absolut den mest begavede inden Wangensteen-Slægten i Vang. Den Gløgge Mand og Menneskekjender Knut Nystuen - populært kaldt "Basen" - kunde således ved en Anledning give Lars W følgende korte, men Indholdsrige Skudsmål: "Detta va ein væl utrusta Ungdom". Alligevel var Skjæbnen den at alle Muligheder for at finde frem til noget varigt godt ikke lå i Lar s W Vei - en Gåde, som det synes at være fra først til sidst. Gjenemglødet som han var af Ungdomsfriskhed og Lærelyst blev han i ung Alder optaget som Elev ved Lærerskolen i Land og tog Eksamen med bedste Karakter. Dog så at der blev gjort den Tilføielse, at han var noget ustadig. For ef terhånden kom "Traditionerne" igjen og der blev et politisk Sjau i Bygden, som det neppe har været Magen til. Efterhånden ble Lars W styren og lei. - det sagdes på Grund af han ble negtet Ægdeskap af familien. Dette får stå for egen Regning. So m en Eiendommelighed ved Lars var hans stærke Interesse for religiøse Emner. .. Skridtvis gik det nedeover med Forstanden og han måtte tilslut anbringes på Amtets Sindsygeasyl, hvor Døden gjorde en Ende på alle hans Lidelser og Savn."

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, August 19, for Dr. Nils Flaten, a member of the faculty of St. Olaf college for 47 years who died at his home, 1401 Forest Avenue, Northfield, at 4 o'clock Sunday morning, August 17. The services were held in St. John's Lutheran church with the pastor, the Rev. Arnold Nelson, officiating. During the service Mrs. Gertrude Boe Overby sang "I Know A Sleep in Jesus Name" and "I'm But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home." Many greetings and memorial gifts were given at the services. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery with Paul Bollenbacher, E. C. Jacobson, Clarence Carlson, Alf Houkom, Hjalmar Lokensgard and Rolf Solum as pallbearers.

Nils Flaten was born in Valdres, Norway, March 18, 1867, the son of Ole and Maren (Wangensten) Flaten. With his parents he came to the United States when he was a year old. They settled in the Dennison community, Goodhue County, where his father was a teacher. He was educated in the local public schools and at the St. Olaf School and the Carleton Academy. Then he attended the University of Minnesota, receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1893, the Master of Arts degree in 1896 and the Doctor of Philosphy degree in 1900. He also studied at the Universities of Grenoble in France and Barcelona in Spain. Dr. Flaten taught at the Grand Forks College 1893-94 and at the United Church seminary in St. Paul from 1894 to 1900. He joined the faculty of St. Olaf College in 1900 as Professor of Latin and in 1916 was made professor of Romance Languages. He was active as a teacher until November 1946 when illness confined him to his home. During World War I in 1918-19 Dr. Flaten served with the Y.M.C.A. in Italy.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as Austin T Austinson of Dennison. He was a member of the Samband between 1903 and 1916.

In the 1930 census, Austin Austinson, 60, lived in the village of Dennison, Warsaw Twp, Goodue County. The family consisted of him, Severina, 51, Myron C., 25, and Evelyn T., 14. Austin was a retail grocery merchant. Their home was worth $5000.

Her obituary was in the 10 September 1958 edition of the Faribault Daily News: “DENNISON (Special) -- Mrs. Emma I. Ellingboe, 88, died at the home of her son, Arthur T. Ellingboe, on Sunday, September 7. She had been in poor health for some time. She was the daughter of Trond and Marit Austinson, born, April 14, 1870, in Dennison, where she had spent the greater part of her life. She attended the public schools and had teacher training in Minnesota. She was married to Thrond I. Ellingboe on June 24, 1900. Ellingboe passed away several years ago. She served on the local school boards and the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Jehova's Witness faith. Surviving Mrs. Ellingboe are Iver T. Ellingboe, Pueblo, Colorado; Mrs. George Chandler, Vancouver, B. C. Canada; Arthur Ellingboe, Dennison; Mrs. Calvin F. Schmid, Seattle, Washington, and Mrs. Louis Heggedhal, Kenyon. There are eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She leaves on sister, Miss Minnie J. Austinson, Dennison and one brother, Nils Austinson, North Sacramento, California. The funeral was held at the Anderson Mortuary in Northfield with Quentin H. Newland of Lakeville, officiating. Burial was in the Oaklawn cemetery at Northfield. Pallbearers were Myron Heggedahl, Bernard Ellingboe, Ludvig Austinson, John Schumm, Gudmund Norswing and Edward Ellingboe. Mr. and Mrs. Iver T. Ellingboe, Pueblo, Mrs. George Chandler, Vancouver and Mrs. C. F. Schmid, Seattle, were here for the funeral.”

Mrs. Louis Heggedahl was Amanda Emmeline Ellingboe, the daughter of Emma’s husband and his first wife.

This illegitimate daughter of Berit Olsdatter Kvale (b. 1851) and Lars Johnson Wangensteen (b. 1848) was the first demonstrable leirmal for each parent. Ove Olsen Kvale was the responsible member of the Vang congregation who stood for the illegitimate Berit.

From the Emigrantar over Bergen frå Austlande, on August 26, 1898: three unmarried individuals who were born in Vang i Valdres but were returning to their home in Minneapolis after a visit departed on the Stjernelinjen line. The three were: Britha Larsen Kvale, 26, b. 1872 (#11616), occupation syerske (seamstress), Rangdi Tollefsen Ellingbø, 28, b. 1870, occupation syerske, and Jørgen Tollefsen Ellingbø, 31, b. 1867, occupation juveler.

Rangdi and Berith arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Majestic on September 8, 1898, after departing Liverpool on August 31st. Rangdi is shown as a U.S. citizen, Berith is a citizen of Norway.

She is probably the Bertha Kvale of Minneapolis, listed in the Valdris Book, who was a member of the Samband between 1902 and 1910.

According to MOMS, Bertha L Kvale married “Christ A Joe” in Hennepin County, Minnesota, on 1 Jan 1913. The Minnesota Marriages database on FamilySearch clarifies the husband’s name for this marriage as Christ A Loe. Bride and groom were both “of Hennepin County.” The ELCA record of the marriage shows Inga Ellingbo of Minneapolis as one of the witnesses. We don’t know who that Inga was.

The hospital was the informant for the information on her death certificate. At the time of her death, she lived at 2622 3rd Avenue S. She had been in Minneapolis for 40 years. She died from an acute small bowel obstruction due to post-operatory adhesions. She had an operation, and “exploratory laporatomy,” on June 21st. She had entered the hospital with peritonitis and bronchopneumonia.

Funeral services for Ole A. Grove, 77, pressman at the Northfield News for 45 years, who passed away at the Northfield hospital on Sunday following a fall on the previous Friday in which he suffered a broken hip, were held on Tuesday, January 25. A brief service ws held at the Minnesota State Odd Fellows Home at 2 p. m. followed by services in the Northfield Congregational-Baptist church at 2:30 p. m. The Rev. Kenneth Martin, pastor of the church, officiated. Interment was made in the Northfield cemetery. During the service Mrs. J. Oliver Sletten and Mrs. S. E. Reed sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden," They were accompanied by Mrs. Etta Larkin. Pallbearers were F. E. Bates, Kenneth Hamann, C. E. Grimes, Herman Roe, Kenneth Johnson and Harold Ramsay. Ole A. Grove was born on January 29, 1872, at Vang, Valders, Norway, the son of Andrew Grove and Gertrude Kvale Grove. When seven years of age he came to the United States with his parents who located in Northfield. Here he learned the printers trade and continued with this profession at the Northfield News until his health failed and he retired. On October 12, 1896, he was married to Mae Cathrine Partlow and they made their home in Northfield their entire married life time. They were the parents of three daughters. Because of the frail health of both, Mr. and Mrs. Grove made their home at the Minnesota State Odd Fellows Home for the past year. Mrs. Grove preceded him in death on last December 9. Mr. Grove is survived by his three daughters, Mrs. Christ Christensen (Gertrude) of Northfield; Mrs. W. G. Thomas A. Grove, a well known resident of Northfield, died at noon Friday, July 19, after a long illness. Mr. Grove had been in poor health ever since the death of his oldest son, Walter Andrew, three years ago, when he had an attack of scarlet fever. Last February he was taken seriously ill, but recovered sufficiently to return to work again for a few weeks. In May, however, his illness took a turn for the worse, ending in his death last Friday. The funeral exercises were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at the home at 706 Union street and at 3 oclock at the Congregational church chapel, Rev. E. B. Dean officiated. Miss Edna Mabon and Tom Mabon sang two songs, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Sometime Well Understand,” the same songs that were sung at the funeral of his son three years ago. The interment was made at Oaklawn cemetery, where the burial services were conducted by the Workman lodge, of which the deceased was a member. The profusion of flowers and the large crowd at the funeral testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The pallbearers at the funeral were L. R. Williamson, D. D. Springsted, C. A. Schleif, Jos. Drake, Ben Odegaard, and Knute Johnson. Visitors from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wohlers of Faribault, and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Mr. Grove was born in Vang, Valders, Norway, on Sept. 5, 1873, and came to America with his parents in 1876. The family settled in Goodhue county and later removed to this vicinity, where they made their home on a farm on the Brush Prairie road. On Aug. 24, 1901, Mr. Grove was married to Miss Florabelle Chamberlain of Northfield, and the couple went to live on the present Spring Brook farm, where they remained two years. Then they moved to Northfield and with the exception of a year spent in Wichita, Kans., they made this their home since. Mr. Grove was employed as a clerk in grocery stores and was known as one of the best and most efficient clerks in the trade. Most recently he was employed at the L. R. Williamson store. Mr. Grove is survived by his wife and three children, Lyle John, Edgar Thomas and Byer Andrew. He leaves also his aged father, Andrew A. The Rev. Ivar Ramseth officiated at 1:30 p.m. Burial was made in the family lot in the Northfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Elling, Roland Hoover, John Ellingboe, Clarence Kolstad, Algot Pearson and Forest Drake. Miss Minnie Grove was born in Northfield on Sept. 6, 1881. She made her home in Northfield where she attended the local schools and was employed for several years as saleslady in the Alex Marshall Company. In 1924 she left to make her home in Fargo, N. Grove, who was accidentally killed July 29 at Seattle, Wash. was received in Northfield Wednesday morning. A letter accompany the remains stated that death resulted from a fall under a loaded wagon which he was driving. The wagon passed over his head and chest, injuring them so badly that death came in a very short time. Funeral services were held Wednesday evening at 5 oclock. Prof. O. Lee conducted the service. John Eltun sang which added to the impressive service. The presence of many friends and the numerous offerings evidenced the high regard with which the deceased was held in Northfield. In the 1900 U. S. census, Rangdi (b. June 1872) and Jorger Ellingbo (b. July 1867), brother and sister, are living with their newly-arrived niece, Mary Ellingboe (b. June 1883), at 1425 Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. Rangdi is a seamstress, Jorger is a jeweler, and Mary has no occupation. Jorger originally came to the U. S. in 1885 and Rangdi in 1890. That niece Mary may have been caught in the 1900 census at the location of her employer where a 16 year-old Mary Ellingbo (but one supposedly born in May of 1884), recently arrived in the U.S. (1900), is a servant at the home of the Cargill family (the Cargills) on 33rd and Portland. (Could not find a Marit born to Ellingboes in Vang in 1884.)

The Vang church book emigration record shows a Marit Andersdatter Ellingbø, b. 1883, emigrating to the U. S. in 1900, perhaps leaving Vang on March 21st. Ole Iversen Ellingboe (#9188) left Vang at about the same time, perhaps leaving Vang on March 23rd.

Also from the Emigrantar over Bergen frå Austlande, on March 23, 1900, Marit Andersdtr Ellingbø, 17, b. 1883, born and living in Vang, unmarried, departed on the Allan line. Her occupation is shown as “datter af Veivgter.” Marit departed from Liverpool on the S.S. Tunisian on April 5, 1900, and arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 14, 1900. She is shown as Marit A. Ellingboe, single female, age 16, occupation “servant.” Her last residence was Valders and her final destination is Minneapolis. She paid for her own passage and had $5. She was going to join her cousin Rangde Ellingbö. Marit appears to have been traveling with 16 year-old Ragnhild Lunde, also from Valders (but not, apparently, from Vang) and also heading to Minneapolis to find work as a domestic.

In the 1901 Minneapolis city directory, she is Marit A Ellingbo, a seamstress, living with Jøger T Ellingbo at 1425 East Franklin.

She was one of the witnesses to her uncle Jøger’s 1903 marriage to Olena.

In the 1903 Minneapolis city directory, she is Marie Ellingbo, tailor at A J Kidd, boarding with Rangdi at 2121 13th Avenue S.

In the 1907 Minneapolis city directory, she is probably the Mary Ellingbo, seamstress, rooming at 2417 Butler Place.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory she is Marie Ellingbo, a seamstress who boards at 2417 Butler Place. There was a Conrad Hanson living on Butler Place at the same time.

In the 1910 Minneapolis city directory, she is still Marie Ellingbo, still a seamstress, still boarding at 2417 Butler Place.

Because Bertha is listed as “sister-in-law” in the 1920 census, we can deduce that Mary became the wife of Conrad Hanson and was living at 4420 43rd Avenue South in Minneapolis at that time.

Shown as Mary I. in her death certificate. Her father was shown as Ole Ellingboe and her mother as Ingeborg Qvale. The informant for her death certificate was her son Burton Hanson of 6421 Oliver in Minneapolis. (Burton was mistaken: Marit’s father was, indeed, Anders Tollefson.) Mary died of asthma and heart disease. Her usual residence at the time of death was 2246 East 56th Street in Minneapolis which may be the address of the “St. Olaf Residence.”

All are from Norway and all appear to have come to the U.S. after 1900.

Jim’s site, in Valdres Slekt, says that she went to the U.S. before she had children and notes that the bygdebok doesn’t say anything about her coming back. Whatever, she is buried in the Vang church cemetery in Norway with her husband.

She had a daughter Ingeborg (b. ca 1935) with Anders Boe (b. 1878). The bygdebok has this Anders (son of Ola Andrisson Bøe 1854-1948 and Anne Olsdatter Øylo 1856-1938) as born in 1888, dying in 1953, and unmarried.

She may be the Bertha Elingbow, a helper/laundress at Sheltering Arms, in the 1917 and 1918 Minneapolis city directories. There are no other Bertha Ellingboe variants in those two city directories.

In the 1918 Alien Registration, she was Bertha Ellingbo, age 23, of Minneapolis.

In the 1919 city directory, she is probably the Bertha Ellingbo who is a machine operator for Brown Brothers Mercantile Co. She boarded at 3500 16th Avenue S.

He retired from the military as a Colonel, earned his JD and had a second career as a lawyer specializing in nuclear regulation. John was an enthusiastic tennis player, swimmer, volleyball player, ballroom dancer and Buckeyes football fan. He is survived by his son, Jack Lerohl, his daughters, Karen Wilson and Randi Lerohl Manning, his companion of many years, Marvel Luykx, as well as his five grandchildren, Megan Keany, Teddy and Tommy Wilson, and Patrick and Lucy Manning. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Ann Lawrence Lerohl as well as his daughters, Jane Rasmussen and Kathryn Keany. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, by his wife's side, at a later date.

John Siljan Austinson, age 90, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on July 30, 2022.

John was born on March 12, 1932 in Havre, MT.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frieda Theresa (Siljan) and Myron Conrad Austinson; and his sisters, Marget Stiegler (Austinson) and Nordis Johnson (Austinson).

John will be remembered for the passion he brought to all his endeavors and the tender loving heart he showed to family and friends. John was a devoted and caring father to his three children. He majored in history at St. Olaf College and Milton College and loved history throughout his life. John excelled in sales. He was Midwest salesman of the year for Encyclopedia Britannica and owned a successful coin dealership for many years.

John retired in Sun City, AZ in 1994. During retirement, he loved listening to the Great Courses history lectures and William W. Johnstone's Western novels and watching the Western Channel. When his failing health permitted, he enjoyed the weekly Bible Study on Zoom with Pastor Gary Luallin (Sun City, AZ).

John is survived by his wife, Cecilia "Sue" (Masilko); his daughter, Karen (Brad) Lewis; two stepsons, John Booker, and Phillip (Julie) Booker; a grandson, Austin Thompson; three nieces, Sara Johnson Sullivan, Kirsten (Rich Lay) Lysne, and Marit (James Rosati) Lysne; and four nephews, Waldo Johnson, III, Michael Johnson, Mark Johnson, and Erik Lysne.

An interment will take place at American Lutheran Church of Sun City, AZ.

Nordis Austinson Johnson, age 86, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her four children, on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. Nordis was born on December 5, 1935, in Chicago, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents Frieda Theresa (Siljan) and Myron Conrad Austinson; sister Marget Stiegler (Austinson); and husband, Waldo Stevens Johnson, Jr.

Throughout her life, Nordis balanced her many roles with selfless dedication and grace. She was a devoted wife of an ELCA Lutheran pastor, Waldo, who served multiple congregations, in Eau Claire, WI; Minneapolis, MN; Evanston, IL; Superior, WI; and Wausau, WI. Nordis was a steadfast partner in this ministry. Alongside her service within these churches, Nordis developed professional careers as a teacher and a real estate agent. She received her B.A. from St. Olaf College in 1958; an M.A. in Education from St. Thomas University in 1975; and the Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) designation in MN and IL. She taught at Jefferson High School, Bloomington, MN, and as a college English professor at the University of Wisconsin in Superior, WI. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic educational organization. Amidst all of this, Nordis raised four children, maintained beautiful homes, and hosted countless church and family gatherings.

Nordis is survived by her brother, John (Sue) Austinson; daughter, Sara Johnson Sullivan; three sons, Waldo Stevens Johnson III; Michael Johnson; and Mark Johnson; two grandchildren, Emily (Jacob) Larsen; Julia Johnson; three nieces, Kirsten (Rich Lay) Lysne; Marit (James Rosati) Lysne; Karen (Marshall) Lewis; and nephew Erik Lysne.
