?RED WING -- The funeral for Arvilla "Charlotte" Karlsrude will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing, with the Rev. Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Karlsrude, 90, of Red Wing, died Saturday (May 20, 2006) at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park in Red Wing.

Arvilla Gustafson was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Red Wing. She graduated from Central High School and then worked a number of years for Citizens Security. On Oct. 10, 1953, she married Gilbert Karlsrude in Red Wing. They lived in South St. Paul, where she worked during the tax season for the State of Minnesota. Her husband died in May 1989. Later that year, she moved back to Red Wing. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening, nature, camping, playing cards and entertaining and traveling. In 2001, she went whitewater rafting in Alaska.

There are no immediate survivors. She is survived by six nieces and a nephew. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church.

Memorials are preferred to Fairview Red Wing Hospice, First Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Clara’s birth to “Sever Nundal” was reported in the July 29, 1898, issue of the Crawford County Advance (page 1, column 2) published in Soldiers Grove.

The Kickapoo Scout’s 16 Jul 1918 edition noted that Thea Thompson and Clara Nundahl were going to La Crosse for employment.

At the time of the 1930 census, Odin and Clara and family were living in Franklin township on a farm next to Clara's brother Carl at "Brookville & Black Bottom Road." Odin and Clara are shown as renting their farm. The family consisted of Odin, 35, Clara, 32, Benetta, 9, Orland, 8, Mildred, 6, Selma, 5, Helen, 3+, Agnes, 2+, and Clifford, 0, and a lodger/servant named Martin Dahlberg, 21. The household apparently did not have a radio. Odin was first married at age 25, Clara at age 23. Clara's parents are shown as having been born in Norway; everyone else was born in Wisconsin. Odin is shown as being a veteran of the World War.

On the other side of the Olson farm was Anna Thompson and down the road past Carl's farm was Sever Nundahl's farm and Tilman Nundahl's farm.

In the 1940 census, the Olson farm is listed a few households down from the Carl Nundahls but on the same census page. Odin and Clara did not own their farm (Carl owned his).

Cora said that Clara was her best friend in childhood.

Clara was shown as unmarried and living at home at the time of the 1920 census on January 11th.

Clara was living in Beloit at the time of her father’s death. Cora had Clara’s 1953 address as 202½ Short Street in Beloit.

The vocalists at Clara’s funeral were her nieces Martha Nundahl, Norma Nundahl, and Marlene Nundahl Thoftne.

Cora mentions going “to Nellie’s party” on November 2, 1944. On March 22, 1945, Cora was “over to Nellie’s for luncheon.” On November 5, 1945, Bess and Cora were “to Nellie’s party.” On November 14, 1945, Cora “rode with Nellie” to Id’s luncheon. On February 7, 1946, Cora met Nellie downtown. On April 25, 1946, Cora was “over to Nellie’s” in the afternoon. Oscar and Nellie, with Id, visited Cora and Maurice on May 5, 1946 (probably to celebrate Oscar and Nellie’s 2nd wedding anniversary). On June 26, 1946, Cora was “over to Nellie’s” in the afternoon. On January 16, 1947, Cora was to a luncheon at Nellie’s. That is the last she is mentioned in Cora’s diary. Nellie is not mentioned when Id, Bess, and Oscar visited Cora and Maurice in Bloomington on August 3, 1948. She is mentioned again in the diary entry for July 27, 1957, when Cora visited Id and “also Mrs. Chalmon.”

The 1947 St. Cloud city directory lists a Mrs. Nellie Carlson residing at 701 McKinley Pl.

She is not the person in Minnesota death certificate 1948-MN-021480.

The 1905 Minnesota state census has an Ernest and Nellie Challman living in Minneapolis with their children Wiilard, 3, and Mildred, 5 months. Ernest and Nellie were both born in Sweden: Ernest in about 1870 and Nellie in about 1876. Ernest was a blacksmith.

In the 1910 census, as Chellman, the family lived at 2549 33rd Avenue in south Minneapolis. They had been married for 10 years and Nellie had had only the two children. Earnest had come to the U.S. in 1872, Nellie in 1894. Earnest was a blacksmith in a blacksmith shop.

In the 1920 census, as Challman, the family lived at 3815 Columbus Avenue in south Minneapolis in a house that they owned. Earnest now is shown as having come to the U.S. in 1890. He is still a blacksmith in a blacksmith shop, apparently his own business. His son Willard, 18, is a bookkeeper in a blacksmith shop.

In the 1930 census, both the kids have moved out and it’s just Nellie S., 52, and Ernest, 60, living at their house at 3815 Columbus Avenue. That house is evaluated as worth $7000. Ernest is shown as having come to the U.S. in 1890, Nellie in 1891. Ernest still has his blacksmith shop.

In the 1940 census, a Nellie Challman, a 64 year-old widow, lived at 3815 Columbus Avenue in Minneapolis in a house that she owned and that she lived in in 1935. She had no occupation but had two lodgers living with her.

Nellie S. Challman, b. 4 Nov 1875, died in Hennepin County on 11 May 1964. Her mother’s maiden name was Gustafson. Her son Willard E. Challman, b. 24 Jun 1901, died in Hennepin County on 19 Jun 1961. His mother’s maiden name was Peterson.

She is listed as Nellie Challman in the 1932, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1940, 1944, 1948, and 1958 city directories:

In the 1950 census, as Nellie S Challman, she is a 74 year-old widow lodging with Lilly Marshall in an apartment at 1704 Park Avenue in south Minneapolis.

She is not listed as Nelle Challman in the 1946 city directory. In that directory she is listed as Nellie S, wife of Carl O Carlson, 4346 40th Ave. S.

Her obit was in the Minneapolis Star on May 13, 1964. She was “formerly of 3428 16th Ave. S.” and died in a rest home. Burial was to be at Crystal Lake. Lived most of her life in Minneapolis and was a member of the Minnehaha Chapter 37 of the Eastern Star. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert Mead of Arlington, Va., a sister, Mrs. Anton H. Anderson, Seattle, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The seemingly authoritative Rude Family Tree on Ancestry, run by Cortney Wall, calls her Petronella Sophia Peterson, 1875-1964. Her parents were Peter Bengston and Anna Lisa Bengstdotter. Peter and Anna Lisa both died in Sweden, Peter in the year Petronella Sophie was born. Cortney Wall is a great-great-granddaughter of Petronella and Ernest Challman. Her Rude Family Tree does not mention Petronella Sophia’s marriage to Oscar Carlson.

PETERSON, Nellie (I15988)

Dalbydata cemetery notes say date of death was October 15th instead of September 15th. MHS death certificate index shows Sept 15th and burial at West Christiania on September 18th. The informant for his death certificate was his son Francis. George died at Dilly Nursing Home in Northfield. The cause of death was heart disease.

He is probably the George Tonsager, retired, who is listed in the 1968, 1970, and 1972 Northfield City Directories as living at 800 West 2nd Street.

Deborah J. Allness?Deborah J. Allness died at her home in Middleton, Wisconsin on June 19, 2007. Throughout her life, Debbie was blessed with unending curiosity and the unique ability to connect with others in a deeply personal way. In her professional career, she worked tirelessly on behalf of people with mental illness and their families and helped countless individuals for whom hope often had been lost. In Wisconsin and across the United States, she was a major influence in the development of innovative community-based mental health services.??Debbie earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychiatric social work from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1973, she joined the staff of the Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT), Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison. This research-based program is dedicated to establishing protocols and standards for team-based services which enable people with serious mental illness to live satisfying lives in the community. Debbie worked for PACT from 1973 to 1986 in roles as a clinical social worker and associate director. She also served as co-director of the PACT Model Dissemination Project to Wisconsin Counties and as co-principal investigator of a major PACT research study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. From 1986 to 1990 Debbie served as director of the Office of Mental Health, Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services in Madison. She was responsible for promulgation of standards for Community Support Programs and successfully worked to secure federal Medicaid funding for these programs. Debbie worked with government agencies and organizations in many states and Canada, helping to establish PACT programs and evaluating client services. She was a speaker at numerous conferences and professional meetings. Collaborating with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Debbie coauthored, with Dr. William Knoedler, NAMI’s Manual for ACT Start-Up based on the PACT model.??From 1987 to 2004 Debbie was a lecturer in the area of serious mental illness at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Social Work. Her students found her to be demanding of the highest standards of care and dedicated to providing respectful services to support the recovery of people with mental illness. Although Debbie’s professional life was full, she was enormously generous with her time and great love for her family and close circle of friends, with her niece, nephews and their children holding a very special place in her life.??She is now at peace with her Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, whom she was growing to know more intimately day by day.??Born November 2, 1948, Debbie grew up in Viroqua. Her parents were Halvor and Aida (Larsen) Allness. She is survived by her sisters, Ann Louise (Mrs. Paul Fuqua) and Judy (Mrs. James Rhodes), both of Arlington, Virginia, and Beth (Mrs. Richard Kilen) of Westby. Eric Dalos, 51, of Wendell, Idaho, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding.

Eric was born April 6, 1962, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Echo and Edwin Dalos. He attended schools in Buhl, graduating in 1980 as valedictorian, and then attended the University of Idaho at Moscow. At the age of 24, he met his lifelong partner, Scott Haag, and they spent 27 years together in the Magic Valley. Eric loved their dogs and cat, treating Cloe, Babe and McGhee as part of their family. His hobbies included gardening and cooking. Eric began delving into his family’s genealogy and enjoyed each new discovery.

Eric was preceded in death by his father, Edwin; his brother-in-law, George McAdams, and his nephew, Doug McAdams. He is survived by his mother, Echo; his partner, Scott Haag of Wendell; his brothers, Jim (Pat) Dalos and Dennis Dalos, both of Twin Falls; sisters, Judy (Ray) Lopez of Federal Way, Wash., and Coral McAdams of Twin Falls; plus many nieces, nephews, close friends and extended family.

A celebration of Eric’s life will be held as an open house from 1 until 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, 2466 Addison Ave. E. in Twin Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Eric’s name to the People for Pets Animal Shelter.

On Eric’s 23andme page: “My father's father and his male siblings moved from northern Norway to North Dakota, USA. The family surname would take the father's first name and add "sen" (for son) to it but when they came to the US they took the name of the place where they lived, Dalosen (dropping the en). My mother's father is traced back to a governor of the colony of Connecticut by the last name of Webster.”

DALOS, Eric Miles (I26724)

Florence attended Lloyd and Beulah’s 70th Anniversary party in Northfield on June 17, 2006.

According to Evey, Florence “liked to tell how she and Beulah were baptized in the same water.”

Baptized, confirmed, and married at the Christiania church.

Florence Viola Sandmann (Tonsager) passed away peacefully at home in Webster on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the age of 101. Florence was born May 31, 1915 to George and Thea (neé Ellingboe) Tonsager in New Market Township. She was baptized and confirmed at West Christiania Church. Her sister, Gladys played the guitar and sang together many times at church. She attended school at Scott County District 65 Country School through the 8th grade, earning two perfect attendance records. She was united in marriage to Ira Sandmann on June 5, 1935. They adopted their 3 children while they farmed near Webster. They farmed for many years before moving into Webster Township in 1978. Ira passed away in December of 1988.

Florence loved to work in her garden, tending to her vegetable and many flower varieties. She was also very active and enjoyed playing cards weekly at the local senior centers. She was a member of St. Johns Church for 81 years. She was active in her church with the Ladies Aid to when changed to the LWML. She loved to crochet and do word searches. Her life was filled with love, spending as much time as possible with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and taught them of the love of fishing. Her favorite color was red.

Florence is survived by her children, Betty Nelson of Webster, Jerry (Richard Kelley) of Golden Valley and Larry (Roxanna) of South Range, WI. She is also survived by her grandchildren, James (Tira) Nelson, Timothy Nelson, Kimberly Nelson, Kristine (Jene) Lattimore; great grandchildren, Jason Nelson, Sarah (Jim) McKinnon, Carrie (Chris) Jeno, Nicholas Nelson, Kayla Vohnoutka and great-great grandchildren, Ashton Hortenbach, Avery Jeno and Lily Nelson; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Tonsager (Francis), and Marcelline Tonsager (Bud); many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ira; her parents; grandson, Mark Nelson; 7 brothers, Clarence, Palmer, Lester, Sidney, her twin Francis, Elvin and Floyd (Bud); 1 sister, Gladys (Mrs. George Sandmann).

Interment, St. John’s Cemetery, Webster.

TONSAGER, Florence Viola (I276)

Harold N. Selseth, Jr., age 89, of Willmar, died Monday evening, October 8, at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, October 12, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.

Harold Norman Selseth, Jr. was born October 5, 1929, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Harold, Sr. and Esther (Boe) Selseth. He was baptized and confirmed at Vinje Lutheran Church and attended Willmar Public Schools, graduating from Willmar High School in 1947. He served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 14, 1955, he married Penny Marie Klabunde and they made their home in Willmar. Harold was employed as a Postal Supervisor at the Post Office in Willmar from 1964 until his retirement in 1990.

Harold was a lifelong member of Vinje Lutheran Church and Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 in Willmar of which his father was a founding member. He enjoyed art, reading, riding motorcycle, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by two daughters: Kathryn Selseth and Rev. Kerry Selseth, both of Willmar, MN; a sister: Ruth (and Myron) Noben of Sun City, AZ; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Penny in 2017; and a brother and sister in infancy.
