    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Stone cutter, farmer
    • Confirmation: Aug 1887, Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden

    Notes:

Jonas Petter was confirmed in 1887 according to Kläppe Marby parish records (August 23 or 26 according to the Hösen of Frappnäs 87-94 Household Exam). He was still living at home (Hösen, Marby Annex) at the time of the 1890 Swedish census.

From the Brunflo parish records, as translated ineptly by DRC:

January 21, 1900 previously mentioned Jonas Petter moved from Oviken to Östersund for work, what kind of work we don’t know

    {This is consistent with what is shown in the 1900 Swedish census in which Jonas is shown as one of two bachelor farmhands living on the farm owned by Olof Huldberg at Gård N:o 53 in Östersund Jämtlands län.}

May 10 to December 3, 1908, Märta Greta worked in Östersund where they met

October 13, 1908 the newlyweds moved to Berge No. 1 in Brunflo at a farm owned by A. Genberg in Östersund

1909 Jonas Petter and Märta Greta moved to No. 1 Åkre where their first children were born

1914 According to information, they then lived in No. 2 Åkre for there Anna was born

After that they moved to Viken, but what year can not be determined, because that move was not reported. The emigration certificate was printed from Åkre to North America on July 11, 1917.

Jonas (46) and Marta (36) emigrated to the US from Sweden in August, 1917, with Rudolph (7), Karin (6), and Anna (3). According to EmiHamn, the family emigrated on August 18th, bound for Amery, WI. They crossed the Atlantic north of the German submarine zone during the World War. They arrived at Amery on September 25, 1917, via Ellis Island and Chicago.

    The Ellis Island records show:

Bergensfjord, "sailing from Christiana," arrived at Ellis Island on September 22, 1917. Among the passengers were:

    Jonsson, Jonas Petter 45y
    Jonsson, Marta Greta 36y
    Jonsson, Jon Rudolf 7y
    Jonsson, Karin Margareta 6y
    Jonsson, Anna Teresia 2y

and further down the page, just as Rudolph remembered:

    Ordell, Gustaf Vilhelm 25y

All 6 were listed as "Sweden-Scand." for ethnicity and "Brunflo, Sweden" as place of residence.

Here's the URL for a page on the Bergensfjord: http://www.museumsnett.no/mka/ssa/ber-fjor.htm

The Jonssons (“Johnsons”) were renting a farm in Apple River township east of Balsam Lake at the time (March 31) of the 1920 Census. They had a boarder: a 36 year old Norwegian man named Nils Hildrum. They couldn’t have lived at the Apple River Twp farm for very long if Lizzie Swanson had to have lived nearby to be the midwife for the birth of Carl. (See next paragraph.)

The Johnsons were renting a farm in Balsam Lake township at the time of the census in 1930. The household consisted of John P Johnson, 58, Martha, 49, Rudolph J, 20, Anna T, 15, and Carl R, 9. They did not have a radio. Karin is not listed so was not living at home. Their neighbors were the Axel Greens on one side and the Lester Fullers on the other. Oscar and Lizzie Swanson lived next to the Fullers.

In the 1940 census, he was still John P Johnson. He and Martha, Rudolph, and Carl, lived in Balsam Lake Twp, “on south town line road near east end.” It was the same house that they lived in in 1935. John P is still a citizen of Sweden. A few entries down the form is the entry for Shirley Engels (#640) and his wife and daughter. John P and Martha had fifth grade educations, Rudolph and Carl were high school graduates.

Jonas died from cancer, either prostate or bladder.

Jonas’s pallbearers: Carl, Rudolph, Ed, Gene, Robert Valgren from St. Paul, and Simon Valgren from Amery.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1956-MN-024232

    Notes:

The 1890 Swedish Census shows Märta’s parish of birth as “Lockne Jemtl. l.”

In August or early September of 1948 Märta and Jonas and Rudolph moved into Milltown.

In the 1950 census, she, as Martha G., and her son, as John R., live in Milltown, Wisconsin. Neither has an occupation.

She sold her house in Milltown in 1952.

Lived with her daughters in Minneapolis the last few years of her life. She lived with Ed and Ann in the summer of 1954.

  1. 4.  Jonas PERSSON was born on 27 Feb 1842 in Mo Lit, Jämtlands län, Sweden; was christened on 2 Mar 1842 in Lit, Jämtlands län, Sweden (son of Per JONSSON and Anna CARLSDOTTER); died on 5 Jan 1904 in Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Horse trading (“Hemmansegare”, or freeholder - owning farmer, according to the 1890 Swedish Census)

    Notes:

He is called Jonas Pehrson in Jonas Petter’s birth record.

The 65-78 household exam for their stay at Meikelsson in Marby seems to show that their marriage date was September 3, 1866.

The 1890 Swedish Census record lists “Marby Annex” as Jonas’s parish of birth. It also shows (in the Arkion version) that at the time of that census the family resided in Hösen, in the parish of Marby Annex, in the county of Jämtlands.

In the 1900 census, Jonas’s occupation is described as Lägenhetsinnehavare. At that time, all the children are gone and it’s just him and Karin. They are shown as residing in Kläppe, in the parish of Marby Jämtlands län, in the county of Jämtland.

From the Kläppe Marby parish records, ineptly translated by DRC:

1875 the family moved to Trappnäs in Hallen

November 11, 1883 moved back to Marby; Märta was married October 7, 1885 in (to?) Frösön, Jonas Petter was confirmed in 1887

    November 13, 1891 Jonas Persson with wife Carin and Anna Catrina and Jonas Petter moved to Sölfbacken in Ovikens Socken {Could not find them in Sölfbacken at that time in the Household Exam. The 87-94 Household Exam for Hösen of Frappnäs says that the family of four, less Märta, moved to Oviken on November 9, 1891.}

1894 moved to Västnor in Oviken

August 20, 1894 Anna Catrina moved to North America

November 20, 1898 Jonas Persson and wife Carin moved to Kläppe, No. 2, Marby; their son Jonas Petter did not move with them and remained in Oviken until 1900 when he moved to Östersund

[Rudolph recounts that Jonas Persson died from cancer. He had earlier gone to a Stockholm specialist but to no avail.]

October 16, 1909 there was an auction after widow Carin Jonsdotter's death which yielded a sum of 737:25

    Birth:
21 Feb in the 1885-1894 Household Exam (Sölfbaken)

Jonas married Karin JONSDOTTER in 1865. Karin (daughter of Jonas JONSSON and Marit ERIKSDOTTER) was born on 6 Mar 1836 in Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden; died on 24 May 1909 in Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Karin JONSDOTTER was born on 6 Mar 1836 in Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden (daughter of Jonas JONSSON and Marit ERIKSDOTTER); died on 24 May 1909 in Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden.

    Notes:

    Or Carin.

Other records say Karin Jonsson, born 2 Mar 1836. The household exam definitely shows the 6th as her birthdate.

Seems to have left her parents’ household on August 11, 1866. At that point they appear elsewhere in the Marby household exam: at a farm named Meikelsson. They leave that location, and move to Kläppe, before Jonas Petter is born because he is not listed although Anna Catharina is. In 1875, they move again, apparently to a different farm in or near Kläppe.

The 1890 Swedish Census records show the name as Karin Jonsdotter, born in 1836. In 1890, Jonas and Anna are still listed as single and living at home. The census record does not mention Marta who, according to other records, had married and, presumably, moved away from home.

Anna Jönsson Ellingboe's cousin Olof Jönsson found the records for the 1909 auction mentioned in the notes under Jonas Persson. At the time of Carin's death, Carin's daughter Märta had already died so that her share of the inheritance was to be distributed to her four children.

In February of 1982, Rudolph Johnson wrote to Mary Carlson as follows:

"The only information I got is the auction papers on the household goods of our father's mother. They are in a wallet in a trunk upstairs. She died in May 1909. Her daughter Martha died in February the same year. Her daughter Anna had gone to America. Her son our father was at the sale and bought quite a lot of stuff. Martha's daughter Karin also was at the sale and bought some stuff. After funeral expenses were deducted, 1/3 of the proceeds was given to pa, 1/3 was sent to Anna in America and 1/3 was given in equal amounts to each of Martha's four living children. Her oldest son had died from internal bleeding. He had lifted too hard in a piano they were moving up a stairway and busted an artery next to the heart.

"Our father's father had died earlier from cancer. He went to Stockholm to see a specialist but nothing could be done to save him. He bought and sold horses. Pa used to help his grandpa put up wood for the winter at their home in Oviken. His grandpa was his mother's father, Mr. Persson.

[Rudolph is apparently confused on this point. Persson was his father's father.]

"Dates of births and deaths I think are written in the old bibles that have been handed down from our grandparents. I think our parents were married in the fall in 1908 I'm not sure."

    Children:
    1. Anna Katarina JONSSON was born on 23 Sep 1866 in Lit, Jämtlands län, Sweden; died on 7 Jan 1942 in Wisconsin; was buried in Volga Cemetery, Amery, Polk County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Married farm laborer (“Odelstorpare” in the 1890 Swedish Census)

    Notes:

The 1890 Swedish Census shows Jöns’s parish of birth as “Lockne Jemtl. l.”

Jöns and Margareta lived first in Tramsta, Lockne and moved to Vamsta, Brunflo in November of 1882. They first appeared in the Wamsta (No. 3) Household Examination in 1883.

The 1890 Swedish Census shows them living in Brunflo at that time:
    Homeparish: Brunflo Moder
    Residence: Wamsta

They were still there in 1900.

Jöns married Margareta NILSDOTTER on 26 Oct 1879 in Tramsta Lockne, Jämtlands län, Sweden.
