  1. 1.  Karl (Charles) JUNGE was born on 30 Jul 1875 in Bremsnes, Kvernes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway (son of Jens Christian JUNGE and Marit Eriksdatter ØVERAAS).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 12 Sep 1875, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
    • Confirmation: 5 Oct 1890, Bremsnes, Kvernes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

He emigrated from Kristiansund on 28 March 1900 on a Cunard ship, with permission. He arrived in the U.S. at Portland, Maine, as “Karl Jange”, 24 year-old laborer, on April 16, 1900, aboard the S.S. Tunisian. His destination was his cousin, E. Gustad of Aitkin, Minnesota, who paid for his passage.

He is the “Charles”, “brother”, living with Edward and Elise Gustad in the 1900 census. That “Charles”, however, was shown as born in March of 1875. The name confusion may be because Karl, despite his Junge surname, was also a Gustad. He had been born on, and lived on, the Gustad farm according to his confirmation record.

He registered for the draft in Superior on September 12, 1918, as Charly Young. He was born on 30 July 1875. He was a ship builder with Superior Ship Building Co. He lived at 1208 N 7th Street in Superior and gave his nearest relative as Enger Young, also of that address. He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair.

He (as Charles Young) and his family live in Superior in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. Charles is a laborer in the shipyards.

In the 1930 census, he is probably the Charles Young, age 45 (sic), who is living in Superior with his 13 year-old son or grandson, also named Charles Young. The older Charles was born in Norway, came to the U.S. in 1900, and was a laborer for the railroad. He was a widower. The younger Charles, and his parents, had been born in Wisconsin. The younger Charles may be indicated as Charles Jr and he may also be indicated as adopted.

In the 1940 census, he is a 64 year-old widower living in a boarding house in Superior. He works for a shipyard.

He is probably the Charles Young, age 87, who died in Superior in Douglas County on 23 May 1962.

Karl married Inga about 1903. Inga was born about 1877 in Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
